My Story
"There are no rules when I make art at home.” It was a simple realization that changed the course of my life forever. It sounds dramatic, but there I sat, in my kindergarten art class, freshly scolded by a rather grouchy substitute art teacher for making an abstract choice to color my sheep purple. She told me, rather harshly, that because sheep aren't purple in real life, they couldn't be in my art either. My six-year-old self couldn’t fathom why she was so bent out of shape over my sheep. It seemed trivial, at best, that I had to make art the way things are in reality. That day, whether it was by natural pull toward art, or possibly just out of spite, I decided to become an artist.
I don’t think outside the box, I just ignore the box altogether. My mind has always worked in abstract, fragmented ways that never quite make sense to those around me. I find inspiration in things most people would disregard. I make art with broken glass, collect cool rocks, and save books from dumpsters. I take it as a challenge to produce unexpected concepts that work well. My goal is to create things that make people stop and say, “huh, that’s different.” As a lover of history and things long forgotten, I pull inspiration from historical art movements and weave them into my own personal art style. I value creativity and individuality above all else. Doing whatever everyone else is doing is boring.
